Hôtel Le Besso

Accommodation

Characterful 11-room hotel in an 1893 building, 300m from the Zinal-Sorebois cable car and a short walk to the finish line. The kind of small, personal place that fills up close to a year ahead for race weekend — if you can get a room, it is the most atmospheric sleep in the village.

Hôtel Europe

Accommodation

One of the larger hotels in Zinal with 34 rooms including 14 family rooms — the practical choice for groups and families who want to be walking distance from the finish. Less charm than the historic options, more likelihood of actually finding a room.

Hôtel La Pointe de Zinal

Accommodation

Self-described Swiss sport lodge 200m from the lifts, with its own restaurant serving seasonal mountain cooking. Set up for exactly this clientele — bike storage, hearty breakfasts, staff who understand a 5am alarm. Good mid-range pick in the village centre.

SWISSPEAK Resorts Zinal

Accommodation

Ninety-three modern apartments sleeping up to 8, right by the finish area. The self-catering kitchen is the underrated race-week weapon: total control over your race-eve dinner and 4am breakfast in a village where restaurant tables are the scarcest resource of the weekend. Best value for groups splitting an apartment.

La Bergère in Ayer — the quiet alternative

Accommodation

Boutique chalet in the tiny hamlet of Ayer, ten minutes down-valley from Zinal among perfectly preserved ancient farmhouses, with singletrack from the door. When Zinal is fully booked — which it will be — this is the sort of place that still has beds and gives you a calmer race eve away from the crowds. Source: ALPSinsight

Book 6–12 months out, or sleep in Sierre

Accommodation

Roughly 5,000 runners aim at a village with a few hundred beds: Zinal race-weekend accommodation disappears up to a year in advance. Fallbacks in order: Ayer or Grimentz down-valley (15 min, need a car or bus), or Sierre itself — more beds, and you wake up on the start-line side of the mountain with free shuttles to the start. Zinal-side sleeping wins for the finish party; Sierre-side wins for race-morning logistics.

Night train from Geneva + free start shuttles

Getting There

Up to 4 trains per hour run Geneva–Sierre in the day, and race organisers lay on a special night train departing Geneva 01:58, arriving Sierre 04:07 — timed for the Tourist-category start blocks. From Sierre station it is a 4-minute walk to the bus stop at Restaurant Le Bourgeois, where free shuttles run directly to the start area. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your start block. Driving on race day: park at Mottec, shuttle up

Getting There

The road into Zinal chokes on race day. Free parking is provided down-valley at Mottec, with free shuttle buses running non-stop 08:00–22:00 to Zinal and the finish area. If your crew is chasing you to the finish, send them here — do not let them gamble on village parking. Source: sierre-zinal.com

Sorebois cable car — big views, zero leg cost

Activities

The Zinal-Sorebois cable car lifts you to ~2,440m for the full panorama of the Imperial Crown — Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Obergabelhorn, Matterhorn, Dent Blanche — the same five 4,000ers the race is named after. The perfect day-before outing: all the scenery of the high course with none of the elevation in your legs.

Grimentz old village stroll

Activities

Fifteen minutes from Zinal, Grimentz is the postcard of the valley — centuries-old larch chalets burnt almost black by the sun, drowning in geraniums. A flat, gentle wander with a café stop: exactly the right intensity for the day before 2,200m of climbing.

Lac de Moiry — save it for after the race

Activities

The turquoise reservoir above Grimentz is the most photogenic spot in the valley, and the lake loop plus glacier viewpoint is a superb hike — but it involves real climbing at altitude. Do it the day after the race as an active-recovery walk, not the day before. Taper legs are for cable cars, not col-bagging.
